Franco Calabi graduated in Pianoforte Principale at the Conservatorio di Musica G. Verdi (Milano) and in Medicine and Surgery at the State University of Milano. He undertook postdoctoral training in Immunogenetics, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics respectively at the Basel Institute for Immunology (1979, Prof. R. Ceppellini), the Department of Biochemistry, University of Genoa, Italy (1979-1980, prof. A Bargellesi-Severi and G. Corte) and at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK (1981-1989, Dr Cesar Milstein). In August 1989 he was appointed Senior Scientific Staff of the Medical Research Council (UK). From 1989 to 1995 he was Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant at the Department of Haematology, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London, and from 1994 to 2002 Senior Lecturer at the Division of Cell and Molecular Biology, Institute of Child Health, London. He was appointed senior INFM (later CNR) scientist in April 2003.
